The web, not to mention my inbox is flooded with the programs that claim to be able to download YouTube videos and convert them to various formats for offline viewing and visualization. In my experience, however, most of them do not work too well, and not worth the hassle of downloading.
So, for a change, here is what is actually quite good.
Freemake Video Downloader is called. You can get http://www.freemake.com/free_video_downloader/. Works on Windows XP and later versions, and the file download is 1.2 MB (although be aware that you will download another 12 MB during installation).

VirusTotal acknowledges that the program is free of malware and viruses. However, keep in mind that the system uses OpenCandy, which means that it has offered to install one or two additional programs for you. Be careful during the installation process, and simply check the box "no" if you do not want more offers.
Once installed, the use of Freemake is really very simple. When you access YouTube in your web browser, a new "Download" button appears on the video you're watching. Press the button and Freemake springs into action, and to display the options shown in the following screen. Choose the output format you want, press the Convert button, and go. Not only can you download videos from this way, but you can also extract audio in MP3 format so you can listen offline. Sharing is sexy
